A November 2011 study has shown that a combination of combined contraceptive pill (OCP) and myo-inositol may be more effective in controlling the endocrine, metabolic, and clinical profile in patients with PCOS than OCP alone, and may reduce insulin levels and insulin resistance. Hence, combined treatment may become a more effective long-term therapeutic choice for controlling PCOS symptoms.
Previous studies have demonstrated that inositol in various forms and combinations may:
- Improve insulin sensitivity, promote weight loss, reduce raised testosterone levels and increase ovulation rates and thus fertility (d-chiro-inositol)
- Produce spontaneous menstrual cycles in up to 88% of anovulatory patients and maintained normal ovulation in 72% of patients for up to 6 months (myo-inositol and folic acid)
- Significantly reduce testosterone levels, blood triglyceride levels, blood pressure, improve insulin sensitivity and restore ovulation in nearly 70% of the women receiving myo-inositol plus folic acid treatment
- Improve ovarian function and fertility in infertile women (melatonin and myo-inositol)
